Szeged Zoo was opened as part of the amusement park in 1985. In those they there were only some animals: 3 monkies, 1 phyton, some deers and boars. The expansion started with the establishment of southern America section and countinued with much more, such as the monkies' house, the parrots' house, Asia-house and a typical Hungarian farm. The newest part is the penguins' home and the management is planning to build a raja covey where the kids could also touch the animals.
In the last 10 years big development was on: all of the animals moved from the narrow cages into huge territories which lookes exactly like in the nature. The wild-fans can follow their favourites every-day life via webcam.
Nowdays animal stars are in Szeged: the meerkats, the penguins, the giraffes, the lions, the tapirs and the ounces.
Szeged Zoo cares much more with nature conservation and education: there is a Rescue Center and a ZooSchool. On the International Earth, Water and Animal Day, the zoo-staff organize speciel events for kids, where they can learn a lot about the animals and nature and have fun in the same time. The zoo has big success in reproduction of endangered animals, there are some little cuties every year. Three ounces were born in July 2012.
